“Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home”

The long and the short of it . . .
On June 21, the shortest day of 2010, I decided to photograph Te Auaunga/Oakley Creek walkway, in the Auckland suburb of Waterview, for six months, from the shortest day till the longest day. Since then, I have jogged or cycled to this little-known sliver of urban green space most days, trying to see it with fresh eyes. I've come to love this scruffy scrap of wilderness, which at one time was threatened by Auckland's motorway expansion, and is soon to have a road and rail tunnel bored underneath it. Urban green space is a declining commodity, yet an essential one, offering respite from city clamour and a restorative for the human spirit. I hope these pictures inspire you to rediscover your own neighbourhood park or reserve.
